To improve access to historical resources about Michigan and the Old Northwest Territory, the Clarke Library has undertaken a project to scan books regularly and distribute the resulting .gif files via the world wide web. At this time we are primarily focusing on the Portrait & Biographical county histories that were printed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Our initial emphasis will be on scanning Portrait & Biographical histories that document counties in the northern half of Michigan's lower peninsula. We have also scanned a statewide gazetteer which gives considerable insight into the business activities in many of Michigan's communities at the beginning of the Civil War.
